The winter holidays are a popular time for traveling for many residents of the United Kingdom. The children are out of school and it’s a time to gather with family wherever they are located to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year.

It is also a great time to travel out of the UK to celebrate New Year’s Eve in other locations. Here are some destinations that you should consider in Europe or other locations around the world to enjoy your celebrations.

New York City

The famous ball drop above Times Square is one of the most famous gathering places in the world on New Year’s Eve. Crowd sizes can easily grow to over one million people in and around the square.

If you don’t want to brave the cold, which can sometimes be bitter in New York, you can rent a room in one of the hotels on Times Square to watch the ball drop from inside. However, you will need to book a room months in advance; however, you will find packages in many hotels that include admission to a hotel party or chocolates and champagne for watching New Year’s activities from your room.

Since it is in the Southern Hemisphere, Sydney is one of the first places in the world to bring in the New Year. Fireworks above the Sydney Opera House light up the sky with over one million people celebrating the start of the new year. Along with the fireworks display, there is a lighted boat parade in the harbour and a dance party is held each year at Bondi Beach.

Hong Kong

If you’re looking for an exotic locale in which to celebrate the coming of a new year, try travelling to Hong Kong. Take a ride in a junk to watch the fireworks over Victoria Harbour or watch them from one of the many rooftop bars located in the city. Since there are many hotels overlooking the harbour, you can avoid the crowds and celebrate with your spouse in the intimacy of your room.

Buy Trip Insurance

When you are traveling out of the country, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance in case you party too much and need medical attention. Without it, you will be stuck paying medical bills out of your pocket in many countries. If you do buy a policy, it covers all doctor and hospital visits if you become ill or have an accident and, if you’re seriously injured, it will pay for your transportation to a hospital near your home.

Since you’ll be excited for your trip, write yourself a note to get insured as many people will often forget to purchase travel insurance when travelling for New Year’s Eve. Along with medical coverage, travel insurance will also cover expenses if your connection is delayed and you miss a flight. If personal items are lost or stolen, you can also make claims with the insurance company and be reimbursed for what is missing as well as any replacement clothing, toiletries, or other personal items you had to buy.

You can buy insurance to cover just one trip or you can buy an annual policy that allows you to travel as often as you like within 12 months and have coverage for all of your trips. If you travel outside of the UK frequently to see family or on business, you won’t need to worry about purchasing insurance for every trip. Instead, you’ll already have coverage so you can book a flight knowing that you’ll be insured for accidents, cancellations, missed flights, and many other incidents.

Many couples get engaged on New Year’s Eve and what better place to pop the question than Paris, the City of Light? On New Year’s Eve, you can take a dinner cruise on the Seine, stroll along the Champs Elysees, and watch the fireworks display over the Eiffel Tower. Of course, there is plenty of champagne to be found in Paris so you can toast the new year and possibly your engagement in one of the world’s most romantic locations.

Alps Ski Trip

There are many packages that you can buy to enjoy skiing on New Year’s Day in places such as Val D’Isere, Meribel, or Chamonix. Rent a ski in/ski out chalet, watch fireworks over the Alps on New Year’s Eve, toast your family and friends, or meet new people at the ski lodge and party the night away. Hiring a chalet is a good way to spend the holidays with extended family and enjoy fresh powder the next morning to bring in the new year.

Nassau, Bahamas

If you’d rather head somewhere tropical for the new year and spend time in a bikini on the beach, try traveling to Nassau. They throw one of the best New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Caribbean, complete with a street carnival called Junkanoo. The carnival takes place many times during the year, including on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, which are the city’s biggest celebrations.

Of course, you don’t have to travel outside of the UK to enjoy a great New Year’s Eve party and Edinburgh is known for throwing one of the best celebrations. In fact, it takes place over three days and there are candlelit concerts and famous musical acts performing during the festivities. To ring in the new year, there is a huge street party with traditional Celtic music and dancing before the fireworks display at the stroke of midnight over the Royal Mile.

Orlando, FL

If you have small children, you should consider spending the holiday in Orlando and visiting Disney World or Universal Studios on New Year’s Eve. Both theme parks throw huge celebrations with dance parties and fireworks displays over Cinderella’s Castle at Disney or the Citywalk at Universal. You can see the characters you love as well as celebrities bringing in the new year.

Travelling for the holidays can be fun, especially if you don’t have to worry about what could happen if there are problems on your trip. Enjoy seeing how different cultures and countries celebrate the incoming new year.
